National League of Cities Summit to Feature Annie E. Casey Foundation Senior Vice President Ralph Smith:

Throughout the year, the Alliance for Children and Families will promote programs, ideas, and activities sponsored by national organizations that support the core values inherent in National Family Week (NFW). These organizations reinforce the NFW objective to strengthen children and families, especially those who are vulnerable.

The 2007 National Summit on Your City’s Families is the nation’s largest gathering of municipal leaders who are working to improve the lives of children, youth, and families in their communities. The Summit, to be held in San Antonio on Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, will feature two exciting keynote speakers: Ralph Smith, Senior Vice President of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Mayor John Hickenlooper of Denver, Colo.

Hundreds of mayors, city council members, and senior municipal staff – along with their local school and community partners – from cities and towns across America will gather in San Antonio for two days of learning, networking, and team-building.

Participants will learn about innovative strategies in a wide range of areas, such as improving public schools, expanding afterschool opportunities, keeping young people safe and out of trouble, promoting youth development, combating childhood obesity, improving school readiness, and promoting family economic success.

The theme of this year’s Summit is “Building Stronger Communities: City Partnerships for Children, Youth, and Families,” highlighting the importance of broad-based, community-wide collaborations and the unique roles that city officials play in bringing key stakeholders together to make their cities great places for families to live and children to thrive. Working in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues, the National League of Cities serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 18,000 cities, villages, and towns it represents. More than 1,600 municipalities of all sizes pay dues to NLC and actively participate as leaders and voting members in the organization.
